The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

Recent Judicial Appeals

Details of Guilty Verdict
