The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
