Administration Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but not the start of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
